"Bring the Magic of Homecoming Dances to SAU16 Students!"
The Issue
Dear SAU16 School Board and Administration,
We, the concerned students, parents, and community members of SAU16, urge you to provide children in SAU16 with the opportunity to experience a homecoming dance. We believe that these events are not only an important part of high school culture but also contribute significantly to a student's social and emotional development.
Homecoming dances have long been cherished traditions in schools across the nation. They offer students a chance to come together as a community, celebrate their school spirit, and create lasting memories with their peers. Unfortunately, many students in SAU16 are missing out on this valuable experience.
By organizing homecoming dances within our district schools (Exeter High School, Cooperative Middle School), we can foster a sense of belonging among our students. These events provide an inclusive environment where everyone can participate regardless of their background or interests. It is crucial for young individuals to feel connected to their school community and develop social skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.
Research has shown that extracurricular activities like homecoming dances have numerous positive effects on students' well-being. According to studies conducted by The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University:
1. Students who participate in extracurricular activities are 49% less likely to use drugs.
2. Involvement in such activities leads to higher academic achievement.
3. Extracurricular participation promotes better mental health by reducing stress levels.
Furthermore, neighboring districts have successfully implemented homecoming dances as part of their educational programs without any negative consequences reported.
We understand that concerns regarding logistics and safety may arise when considering such events; however, we firmly believe that with proper planning and supervision from faculty members or parent volunteers along with collaboration between schools and local law enforcement agencies, these concerns can be effectively addressed.
By signing this petition, we express our support for implementing homecoming dances in SAU16 schools. We believe that providing our children with the opportunity to experience these events will enhance their overall educational journey and contribute positively to their personal growth.
We kindly request the SAU16 School Board and Administration to consider our plea and take action towards organizing homecoming dances within our district. Together, let's create an inclusive and vibrant school community that fosters social connections and enriches the lives of our students.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
