Bring Back Red BusesWaltham Abbey, Vereinigtes Königreich
03.05.2025

🚍 One of the key demands of this campaign is the restoration of the Waltham Cross to Upshire section of TfL bus route 317 — a short but essential stretch that once gave residents of Waltham Abbey a reliable, TfL-integrated connection to Waltham Cross station, Enfield Town, and the wider London transport network.

This route was quietly cut back years ago. Now, its absence is felt more than ever.

🔴 Why it matters:

  • Evening and late-night buses barely exist. The last weekday buses from Waltham Cross to Waltham Abbey depart as early as 20:52 and 21:31. After that? Nothing. Trains from Liverpool Street keep arriving until after midnight, but there’s no bus home.
  • Sundays and bank holidays are even worse. Waltham Abbey only gets one bus route, which runs just once an hour. The last bus leaves Waltham Cross at just 19:45, and from Loughton to Waltham Abbey even earlier, at just 19:00.
  • Waltham Abbey lacks a single TfL bus route, with fares and tickets varying between commercial operators, and completely unintegrated with the wider TfL Oyster/contactless system and fare caps, forcing passengers to pay additional fares.
  • Route 317 already runs every 20-30 minutes until 01:25, 7 days a week. It’s frequent, reliable, and connects to the key hubs of Waltham Cross and Enfield Town. Extending it a few extra minutes up to Upshire would transform connectivity for Waltham Abbey.

🟢 What this change would do:

  • Provide frequent, reliable public transport for Waltham Abbey — seven days a week, until late at night, with a comprehensive service to our nearest station (Waltham Cross).
  • Provide integration with TfL's Oyster and contactless fares, including cross-network fare capping, as used at all nearby stations (including Waltham Cross) and on bus services in neighbouring areas.
  • Restore a direct bus service between Waltham Abbey and Enfield Town.
  • Support our evening and night-time economy, local workers, students, and visitors.
  • Help those affected by the expanded ULEZ zone.

This is a quick, cost-effective win that TfL and Essex County Council could deliver — and one that would make a huge difference to the lives of local people.
