Bring Tagalog to PUSD!
The Issue
Pleasanton USD is home to many Filipino-American students, yet there is currently no opportunity to study Tagalog as part of the world language curriculum. While students can choose to learn several other languages, Filipino students are unable to learn or strengthen a language that is closely connected to their heritage, culture, and family. We believe that offering Tagalog would promote cultural understanding and give students the opportunity to learn one of the official languages in the Philippines. It would support heritage speakers in preserving their language while also giving Filipino and Non-Filipino students a chance to explore Filipino culture and History.
To advocate for this opportunity, Tagalog At PUSD has made this petition and shared it throughout the Tri-Valley to gain support from students, families, and community who would also like to have Tagalog offered as a World Language Class in Pleasanton USD. We are also working with school leaders such as World Language Teachers, Principals, Vice Principals, and Filipino Organizations such as Filipino-American Student Association (AVHS), Pilipino Youth Organization (FHS), and Council for Teaching Filipino Language and Culture (CTFLC based in South California) to show our devotion in bringing Tagalog to our schools.
Apart from this petition, Tagalog At PUSD is also working with Kabataan Muna, an organization dedicated to raise funds and support underserved students across the Philippines by donating school necessities such as learning materials, hygiene kit, and meals.
When this petition is successful, we will continue to build a stronger Filipino Community within our district through cultural events, language learning opportunities, and more. By signing this petition, you’re supporting a more inclusive language program, and strengthening opportunities for cultural education and meaningful service both locally and abroad.
