The Issue

Syphon Filter: The Omega Strain is the major missing entry from the modern Syphon Filter lineup.

Syphon Filter, Syphon Filter 2, Syphon Filter 3, Dark Mirror, and Logan’s Shadow have all been re-released for modern PlayStation consoles through the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog. The Omega Strain itself previously received a digital PS2 Classics release on PS3, and Sony has had a current PS2 emulator for PS4 and PS5 Classics releases since 2024.

The major pieces are already in place: the rest of the series has been brought forward, TOS has already gone through Sony’s Classics process once, and a modern PS2 emulation platform now exists.

We ask Sony Interactive Entertainment and Bend Studio to:

  • Re-release The Omega Strain for PS4 and PS5, preferably both through the Classics Catalog and as a standalone purchase. Same as the other 5 SF games.
  • Restore the original four-player online co-op functionality.
  • Preserve all three original versions: North American NTSC-U/C, European/Australian PAL, and Korean NTSC-J. The existing 5 Syphon Filter Classics already establish precedent for preserving NTSC, PAL and NTSC-J regional versions.

TOS is the most mechanically advanced game in the series and remains the most actively played entry within the Syphon Filter community. Its large missions, character progression, extensive weapons equipment system, rankings, unlockables, repeatable par time and open-ended mission structure give it exceptional replayability.

Online co-op is also part of the complete TOS experience rather than a disposable multiplayer extra mode. It contributes to progression, objectives, unlockables, story completion, getting the good ending, and experiencing the game in full.
On top of that, it’s fun to play as a social activity and a skill-based team effort. Restoring online would give longtime players a strong reason to return, while introducing new players to one of the most distinctive cooperative games in the franchise and in Sony’s catalog as a whole.

This is not a request for a remake, remaster or sequel. It is a request to preserve and re-release the original game on modern PlayStation hardware via emulation, including the online functionality that was central to its design.

Community-Tested Technical Recommendations:

We understand that the purpose of Classics emulation is first to preserve the original game. Original behavior and presentation should remain available.

At the same time, emulation and higher-resolution rendering can introduce issues that did not exist on original hardware. The Syphon Filter community has spent years testing TOS and can provide patches, screenshots, videos and technical findings as reference material so Bend Studio and PlayStation can implement and validate their own official solutions.

Recommendations:

  1. True 16:9 Widescreen: Offer an optional proper widescreen instead of simple stretching, expand in-game FOV / Re-position HUD / Menus could be reflowed/restructured where practical or remain stretched if simpler. Existing community patches demonstrate that proper widescreen is achievable while preserving correct gameplay proportions.

  2. PAL Timing: Investigate the correct PAL timing and why the PAL version can run at 50 FPS under emulation while the NTSC versions run at 30 FPS. The game’s code appears to follow 50 FPS, but this creates an unusual regional disparity: PS2 games generally follow either 60/50 NTSC/PAL or 30/25 NTSC/PAL, while TOS instead presents a 30/50 relationship. On original PS2 hardware, PAL does not appear to sustain 50 FPS, while emulation can lock it to a full 50 FPS and make movement considerably faster. If this proves to be an original bug or oversight exposed by emulation, a community 25 FPS patch already exists as proof of concept for a possible fix.

  3. Uprendering Artifacts: Fix visual artifacts introduced by higher internal resolution, such as visible lines around the radar/compass. These do not occur at native resolution, so correcting them is part of accurate emulation rather than altering the original game. The community used texture replacement for this case.

  4. Deinterlacing: Properly deinterlace the original 480i/576i modes. TOS’s built-in 480p Progressive Scan mode distorts some HUD, menus and other 2D elements. Emulator-side deinterlacing can preserve the original layout while presenting a clean progressive image. Since the Classics PS2 emulator already improves presentation for modern displays through higher internal resolution, proper deinterlacing naturally complements that approach.

  5. Texture Replacement: Weapons and clothing in the game look sharp and higher quality in the menus, but when in-mission they get blurred and downscaled. Community Texture Packs replace the lower quality in-mission ones with the menu ones, and some weapons and clothing were borrowed from the demos as well. If the PS Plus PS2 emulator has a texture replacement feature, replacing these textures  could improve the look of the game, and they come from within the game itself.

  6. Optional Toggles: If possible, just like the existing aspect ratio toggles, a toggle for higher FPS can modernize the game even further, 60 FPS for NTSC-U/C & NTSC-J and 50 FPS for PAL.
Community patches have already proved this is possible.

The community is also willing to help test the release and report any compatibility issues discovered after launch, including reproducible bug reports, screenshots, videos and technical observations through the existing PlayStation Support and Bend Studio channels.
