Bring Safe Streets to Carlton NSW

Bring Safe Streets to Carlton NSW

The issue

Carlton is a beautiful suburb with a strong sense of community. For many years it was able to escape the development and population pressures that have affected  surrounding suburbs, such as Rockdale, Kogarah, and Hurstville. However that is changing and one place it is most visible is in our streets.

This is a petition to Georges River Council to introduce speed reduction measures  into the busiest streets around the Veridian Kogarah development: Hampton Court Road, Buchanan St, English Street, and Bellevue Street.

These speed reduction measures are:

·      reduce the speed limit to 40km/h;

·      install speed humps to limit speeding; and

·      create a right hand turn onto Railway Parade from English Street.

Too often these streets are used by motorists who exceed the 50km/hour speed limit with no thought for local residents. Local residents want to see safe speeds made compulsory for those using our local streets to protect the safety of our community and the village atmosphere of Carlton that makes it so valued.

The development of the Veridian Kogarah apartment complex will bring further pressure and traffic. The development is scheduled to be completed at the end of 2019, and will have 220 apartments containing 350+ people. Unless we act, these three streets will be used even more than they are now as thoroughfares by motorists.

In addition to speed reduction measures, the petition also asks Georges River Council to enable a right hand turn onto Railway Parade at English Street. The complex will have an entrance at Blake Street, and an exit onto English Street. As the turn onto Railway Parade at English Street is currently a 'no right hand turn', all traffic exiting the complex wishing to head towards Kogarah will be forced through English Street and Bellevue Street, or Hampton Court Road and Buchanan Street / Jubilee Avenue, where right hand turns are permitted. This will result in increased traffic into local streets that could be avoided if the intersection at English Street and Railway Parade permitted a right hand turn.

If you are a resident of Carlton and Kogarah, and you want to see these improvements to your local community, please sign our petition. Thank you for your support.
