Bring Safe Passage to Fort Dearborn Elementary School in Chicago
The Issue
We, the parents, caregivers, and concerned community members of Fort Dearborn Elementary School and the surrounding Brainerd Park community, are calling for the implementation of a Safe Passage program to help protect our children as they travel to and from school.
Recent reports of a young girl in our community being sexually assaulted have heightened concerns about the safety of our children and the need for immediate action. This is NOT the first incident.
Every child deserves to walk to school, return home, and participate in their education without fear of violence, harassment, or harm.
We are asking Chicago Public Schools , Alderman Ronnie Mosley, Mayor Brandon Johnson and other appropriate city officials to:
-Establish Safe Passage coverage for Fort Dearborn Elementary School and the surrounding walking routes used by students.
-Identify and address unsafe areas, including alleys and routes frequently traveled by children.
-Provide trained Safe Passage workers during school arrival and dismissal times.
-Work directly with parents, school leadership, and community members to develop a comprehensive student safety plan.
-Communicate openly with families about safety concerns and the steps being taken to protect our children.
As parents and community members, we should not have to wonder whether our children will make it safely to and from school.
We are calling on the appropriate decision-makers to hear our voices, take our concerns seriously, and work with our community to make Safe Passage a reality at Fort Dearborn Elementary.
Our children deserve safety. Our parents deserve peace of mind. Our community deserves action.
