The Issue

Throughout its history, the Super Bowl halftime show has been a spectacle that unites diverse audiences from across the globe, showcasing legendary performances from all walks of music. Yet, in recent years, there has been a discernible tilt towards a single genre—hip-hop. While hip-hop certainly has its place, it’s important to recognize and represent the broad spectrum of music that appeals to the entirety of the audience, including the millions of rock fans.

As an avid rock enthusiast, I've felt increasingly alienated by the recent choices for Super Bowl halftime shows. It seems as though our desires for a balanced representation of music are continuously sidelined. Jay-Z, who has taken the reins of curating these performances, frequently selects artists within his circle—often from a hip-hop background—casting aside the rich tapestry of rock music that has long been part of the event’s allure.

Rock legends like Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones, and U2 have set the stage alight in past Super Bowl halftime shows, creating unforgettable performances that spanned generations and backgrounds, uniting fans in a shared love for timeless tunes. These shows celebrated the diversity of music, bridging the gap between populations and genres. It's time to bring back this inclusivity by introducing a lineup of rock musicians who can capture the spirit and energy of the Super Bowl.

The Super Bowl is more than just an American event—it is a global celebration that should reflect the diverse taste of its audience. Failing to include rock representations does a disservice to both the event and its fans. Considering previous viewer ratings and audience feedback, incorporating rock bands in the halftime show could not only enhance viewer satisfaction but also increase ratings and bring back old fans who have turned away due to the current bias towards hip-hop.

To achieve a balanced representation of different music genres and prioritize quality over favoritism, we propose forming an independent committee representing various music genres to oversee halftime selections. Factors such as audience feedback, past performance acclaim, and genre rotation could guide their choices.

Sign this petition to call on the NFL and Super Bowl halftime show organizers to recognize the wide-ranging tastes of their audience—bringing rock music back to the forefront. Let’s celebrate the eclectic mix of our musical heritage and ensure future halftime shows represent us all.
