Bring Ranked-Choice Voting to Fairfax County

Bring Ranked-Choice Voting to Fairfax County
The Issue
As a 16-year-old Fairfax County resident and rising junior at Gonzaga College High School, I've watched our political system become increasingly divided and dysfunctional. Despite being too young to vote, I see how our current electoral system forces voters into impossible choices and leaves many feeling unrepresented.
Ranked Choice Voting isn't a partisan issue; it's about giving every voter a real voice. In our current system, voters often feel pressured to vote against someone rather than for the candidate who truly represents their values. RCV eliminates this problem by allowing voters to rank candidates in order of preference, ensuring winners have genuine majority support.
I'm starting this petition because young people like me will inherit the consequences of today's political decisions. We deserve a system that encourages candidates to build broad coalitions rather than appeal only to their base. RCV promotes more civil campaigns, reduces negative advertising, and gives third-party and independent candidates a fair shot.
Fairfax County has always been a leader in innovation and good governance. We can lead Virginia—and the nation—in demonstrating that there's a better way to conduct elections. Cities like New York, San Francisco, and Minneapolis have already implemented RCV successfully. It's time for Fairfax County to join them.
This isn't about helping one party over another; it's about creating a democracy that works for everyone. I'm asking you to sign this petition not because of your political affiliation, but because you believe in giving voters more choice and ensuring our elected officials truly represent the will of the people.
