Living in Charleston, WV, often feels like being in a musical black hole when you're a fan of rock and heavy metal. For far too long, our town has been dominated by the same old country tunes and repeat performances from the same artists. It's honestly gotten stale. If you're like me, craving the powerful riffs and high-energy performances that rock and heavy metal bring, you're left disappointed as massive tours and renowned bands just drive right by us.
So why is this happening? The simple answer lies in the lack of booking. Charleston has the venues, the fans, and the capacity to host major rock and heavy metal artists, yet we continuously miss out. The United States rock and heavy metal concert industry has shown significant growth, with more than 59 million people attending concerts nationwide in the past year alone according to Pollstar's year-end report. But why should Charleston miss out on this rocking wave?
A bustling local concert scene boosts tourism, energizes local businesses, and provides an incredible cultural dynamic. Cities like Columbus and Pittsburgh regularly attract top artists, and their economies benefit tremendously from the influx of concertgoers. Bringing diverse music acts can make Charleston a cultural hub, attracting new visitors and invigorating our local economy.
The solution is clear. We need to lobby local promoters and venues like the Charleston Coliseum and Entertainment Complex to actively seek out these bands for upcoming tours. They should coordinate with booking agents and music festivals to present viable options for Charleston as a tour stop.
