The Issue

When you hear Michelle Taylor's story on the Podcast "Crime to Burn," you will understand the immense torture she has endured. This is not just a miscarriage of justice - it's a human rights violation. Michelle has faced the unimaginable: the loss of her home to a fire, the tragic death of her son, and an unjust legal system that has failed her at every turn.

Michelle was incarcerated for two and a half years before she was given the opportunity to post bond. Even then, she was coerced into accepting a plea deal under the false promise of avoiding further jail time. The charges she faced were based on flawed evidence of gasoline samples, which have since been recanted by the state lab. Without gasoline, there is no arson case. There was no reason for Michelle to plead guilty but out of fear for her life — the potential of a life sentence for something she did not commit — Michelle made a choice in a desperate moment.

While incarcerated, Michelle suffered physical and emotional abuse. She bravely reported these abuses, only to face retaliation and be sent back to the same jail that mistreated her. The authorities have acknowledged that Michelle has served her time, and yet she remains behind bars, her rights continually violated. This is not justice.

Michelle's story is a heartbreaking testament to how our system can fail. Her constitutional rights have been blatantly ignored. Her time away from her loved ones, her torment, and the threats she faces daily within the prison system is unacceptable and must not continue.

The Department of Corrections has recognized that Michelle’s time has been served — it is time to bring her home. The mistakes of the justice system in her case have been laid bare. We urge you to correct this wrong, to demand justice and safety for Michelle, and to ensure that no one else faces what she has undergone.

Help bring Michelle Taylor back home where she belongs. Please sign this petition to show your support for her immediate release and to call for an end to her unjust incarceration.
