Bring Mango’s Shooter to Justice and Strengthen Oklahoma Cruelty Laws
The Issue
Mango is a French bulldog who was found in the Oklahoma City metro in August, after a witness reported seeing someone throw her out of a vehicle by the road. Veterinarians found she had been shot in the head twice. The bullets fractured her skull, her jaw and the bone around her eye. She was also starving, weighing around 12 pounds when a healthy dog her size should weigh 26 to 27.
Months later, there are no public reports of an arrest. Angel Fund OKC, the nonprofit caring for Mango, has asked anyone who saw the incident or noticed a suspicious vehicle to come forward.
Mango has fought hard. She was back on her feet within two days of her rescue and has slowly regained weight and strength. But in late October she lost control of her back legs and bladder for roughly 40 minutes. She still can’t breathe through her right nostril, and her caregivers say the damage to her face may be too delicate to repair with surgery. No one knows yet what her long-term future holds.
The Oklahoma City Police Department and the Oklahoma County District Attorney can push this case forward. They should make finding Mango’s attacker a priority, share updates with the public, and pursue the strongest charges the law allows.
Oklahoma lawmakers have a role too. Shooting an animal and tossing it away like trash is one of the most violent forms of cruelty there is. The Oklahoma Legislature should review penalties for cases like this and make sure the punishment fits the harm.
Anyone with information can call Angel Fund OKC at (405) 461-0906.
Sign the petition to demand justice for Mango before her case goes cold.
