Mahin Shahriar, a young Bangladeshi-Canadian resident of Toronto, is currently being detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Buffalo, New York.

He has lived in Canada for several years, working as a rideshare driver to support his mother and younger sister. His mother is a recognized refugee (Protected Person), and his sister is a full-time student.

During a period of severe emotional distress, Mahin was misled by a “friend” and accidentally crossed the Canada–U.S. border. Realizing his mistake, he voluntarily turned himself in to U.S. border officers, explaining his situation and his refugee claim in Canada.

However, instead of being returned to Canada, he was detained — and remains in ICE custody to this day.
