The Issue

As an alumna and proud supporter of Blackwell High School , I have seen first-hand how sports can change lives, foster friendships, and teach lifelong skills. Yet, in our district, one crucial piece is missing: soccer. For many of our students passionate about the sport, there is no opportunity to play at the school level. This underrepresentation is disheartening, especially as soccer is not just a game, but a global phenomenon with immense educational benefits.

The absence of soccer teams at Blackwell High is not just an oversight but a missed opportunity to enrich students’ lives. Numerous studies have shown that students who engage in school sports tend to perform better academically and develop essential social skills. According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, participation in high school sports has a positive impact on students' grades and their ability to handle stress. Soccer, in particular, encourages teamwork, strategic thinking, and resilience. If we want our students to excel both inside and outside the classroom, we must offer them diverse opportunities.

Moreover, our community itself has shown an incredible interest in soccer. Local youth leagues and regional clubs are thriving, indicating that there is both demand and enthusiasm for the sport. By not offering soccer at the high school level, we fail to provide our students a chance to continue pursuing and perfecting their passion as they do in other stages of education.

The cost of initiating boys' and girls' soccer teams is more than returnable, given the benefits. Initial funding could be achieved through community fundraisers, grants, and sponsorship from local businesses who are already engaged with youth sports. Furthermore, volunteer opportunities could involve alumni who are eager to give back to the school. These initiatives can ease the financial burden while ensuring that the program has the resources to succeed.

I urge the Blackwell Independent School District to set the wheels in motion by forming a board to explore the practical steps in establishing boys' and girls' soccer teams. With valid planning and support, we can introduce a robust program that promises growth and excitement in our student body.

By signing this petition, you're standing with the existing and future generations of Blackwell High School students who desire a more comprehensive and inclusive sports program. Let us give our children the opportunity to compete, learn, and thrive through soccer. Please sign this petition to bring boys' and girls' soccer teams to Blackwell High School.
