Bring back Whisper and launch a successor (W2)
The Issue
Remembering Whisper? You know the story! Whisper was a free proprietary mobile app. It was a form of anonymous social media, allowing users to post and share photo and video messages anonymously, although this claim has been challenged with privacy concerns over Whisper's handling of user data. The postings, called "whispers", consist of text superimposed over an image, and the background imagery is either automatically retrieved from Whisper's search engine or uploaded by the user.
The History: The app was launched in March 2012 by WhisperText LLC. It was co-founded by CEO Michael Heyward and Brad Brooks.
- Promotional Campaign Materials: Beginning in 2015, the service sought to become more of a brand advertising platform, with promotional partnerships with Netflix, NBCUniversal, Disney, HBO and MTV.
- In February 2016, Whisper announced the launch of the Spanish-language version of its app on both iOS and Android devices, with an initial launch in Mexico. In March, Whisper partnered with the It Gets Better Project in Mexico (Todo Mejora México) on a campaign to empower LGBTQ voices in Mexico.
- In June 2016, Whisper announced that they would be introducing video ads, and started on July 3 with a partnership with Universal Studios and Illumination Entertainment to promote the first movie titled The Secret Life of Pets 1, a 2016 computer-animated movie. Whisper said that it would share the most popular posts on its Facebook page, which reportedly reached more than 200 million people.
- In June 2016, Whisper also added a "Groups" function, which allows users to curate Whispers under different topics, and to connect with other users who have shared interests.
- In February 2017, Whisper announced its partnership with HBO to promote the TV series Big Little Lies, and also embarked on promotional partnerships with Dove soap and Universal Music Group.
- According to TechCrunch, as of March 2017, Whisper had a total of 17 billion monthly pageviews on its mobile and desktop websites, social channels and publisher network, with 250 million monthly users across 187 countries.
- In March 2017, Whisper launched a video widget that publishers (primarily news websites) could embed within articles to feature contextual Whisper content.
- In May 2017, MTV partnered with Whisper to promote the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards. That same month, the Tronc media company, which publishes the Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune, began using Whisper's content widget on its websites.
What Happened? In October 2022, Whisper was removed from the Apple App Store, then re-added but removed temporarily again in 2023; it was most recently restored to the App Store in March 2024. Whisper was removed for a final time from the App Store and as of October 2024 is still not listed as an app. In September 2024, the app was removed from the Google Play Store but returned in January 2025 a year later before being removed again that same month.
- In July 2025, the app was permanently discontinued.
- Much like Amino which also shut down on December 19th of the same year, there was no official statement from MediaLab since the app was permanently discontinued in July 2025.
- The Acquisition: Years before this, MediaLab AI bought Whisper for undisclosed terms. Ironically, MediaLab was co-founded by Michael Heywerd and Brad Brooks, Whisper's original creators.
- Online Bullying & Lack of Moderation: Whisper faced years of criticism for fueling severe online bullying, harassment, and toxicity due to its complete anoymity. While MediaLab claimed a "zero-tolerance policy", moderation remained a persistent issue.
- Data Leak: Just months after MediaLab's acquisition, in March 2020, a bombshell investigation revealed that Whisper had left a non-password protected/unprotected database public which exposed nearly 900 million user records.
- Child Safety/Child Abuse Investigations: Whisper also suffered scrutiny from child safety advocates and law enforcement. The app became plagued by spam, drug trafficking and child predators. Also, it indicated that MediaLab essentially abandoned content moderation and technical updates, letting the software decay.
Impact & Legacy: Fans were disappointing that they want MediaLab to bring back Whisper as a new and improved/safe and secure successor called Whisper 2 or W2 (stylized as whisper2 or whisper 2)
- About Whisper 2: Whisper 2 will be safe and secure than its predecessor and its still a free proprietary mobile app. Whisper 2 will be added various improvements like moderation tools such as robust content filtering, automated moderation and real-time review mechanisms, improved searchable internal databases, secure storage data features, local deletion, and improved communication architecture like the addition of traditional profiles, follower systems and multi-device account syncing something that the original Whisper doesn't have, as well as social graph and friends list. In addition, Whisper 2 will also have cross compatibility with Amino 2.0 and others like Hush - Express Freely, Konfession. Whisper Secrets, Yik Yak, Sidechat, Chavli, Lox, Banter and more. Whisper 2 will also going to have parental controls and password protection something the original Whisper left a non-password protected database public.
Whisper 2 is coming soon so sign this petition to bring back the free proprietary mobile app as a form of social media Whisper as a successor called Whisper 2. MediaLab and others like Reddit, Facebook, X and others as well as the support from TigerConnect, Narvii, Marketecture Media and CrunchBase will help to bring back and reuse assets. Sequoia Capital and Lightspeed will handle additional support to reuse assets from the originalk Whisper too. #BringBackWhisper #LaunchW2 #ReleaseW2 #LaunchASuccessor #AnnounceW2 #AnnounceASuccessor #MediaLab #BringBackW #W2 #ComingSoon #LaunchASafe&SecureSuccessor #Safe&Secure #LaunchANew&Improved/Safe&SecureSuccessor #Successor #SequelApp #TheSequelApp
