Bring Back the Train: Restore Passenger Rail from Adelaide to Whyalla

Bring Back the Train: Restore Passenger Rail from Adelaide to Whyalla
The issue
Whyalla is one of South Australia's most important regional cities — and it deserves to be connected by more than just a highway.
We, the undersigned, call on the South Australian and Federal Governments to fund a feasibility study into reinstating passenger rail services between Adelaide and Whyalla, using the existing standard gauge corridor via Port Pirie and Port Augusta.
🚉 Why This Matters:
🌆 Regional equity: Whyalla, Port Augusta, and Port Pirie are major regional centres with growing needs — yet have no passenger rail at all.
🏭 Industrial and economic growth: The Upper Spencer Gulf region supports heavy industry, manufacturing, and freight — all requiring reliable passenger and freight transport.
🏥 Access to services: Rail makes it easier for regional residents to reach Adelaide’s hospitals, universities, and services — and for visitors to access the Upper Spencer Gulf.
🧓 Mobility and inclusion: A rail service supports seniors, students, and people without cars in a region with long travel distances and limited bus options.
🚗 Road safety: The Augusta and Princes Highways are high-risk corridors. Every train trip means fewer cars and safer roads.
🚄 Modern rail services: Using modern, fuel-efficient railcars like VLocity or similar would provide fast, reliable, and comfortable passenger connections — encouraging regular use and boosting regional mobility.
✅ What We’re Asking:
We respectfully urge the SA Government and Infrastructure Australia to:
Fund a feasibility study into reintroducing passenger rail from Adelaide to Whyalla, via Port Pirie and Port Augusta.
Assess the use of the existing standard gauge track for regional services.
Explore economic benefits for the Upper Spencer Gulf including job access, freight integration, and tourism.
🛤️ Whyalla, Port Augusta & Port Pirie Deserve Rail
All three cities are key to South Australia’s economic and industrial future. But without proper transport links, they remain isolated.
Let’s put the Upper Spencer Gulf back on track.
Sign and share this petition if you support smart, sustainable, regional rail.
