Tesco have recently made a significant change to one of their stores in West London.  In the Tesco Extra branch in Osterley, they have converted over half of the tills to self service. This is in addition to the already present self-service tills for baskets.  A spokesman confirmed that this is not a temporary trial but an initial test by Tesco prior to converting all the tills across all of their store network to self-service!

This is not just for basket shopping, but is now for trolley shopping too. Customers have to first load their shopping onto the conveyor belt, then scan their shopping themselves and then subsequently pack their bags. The next customer cannot start until the previous customer has finished, there is minimal space to pile the shopping between scanning and packing and the experience takes two to four times longer than it did previously with checkout staff.

This is being introduced as a money saving drive by Tesco, to eventually sack all of their checkout staff.

Over the last year Amazon have introduced staffless payment stores to minimise their staff costs, their customers choosing to download their app and receive a staffless experience. Tesco are trying to now similarly reduce their staff costs, but on the cheap, without any new scanning technology, simply passing the burden on to their customers who will face a significantly slower experience and poorer service.

Sign the petition to stop Tesco proceeding with this project and bring back our check-out staff!
