The Issue

Dear Chick-fil-A,

We love you. That’s why this is hard to say: something has been missing from our trays since January 18, 2016.

Cole slaw wasn’t a passing trend. It traces back to Truett Cathy’s Dwarf Grill in Hapeville, before there was a Chick-fil-A at all, and it stayed on your menu for roughly half a century. It belonged on the original menu alongside the chicken sandwich, the waffle fries, and the lemonade. When you retired it, the Facebook pleas started before it was even gone. One fan in Estero, Florida, put it simply: “BRING BACK THE SLAW!!!” Ten years later, we’re still asking. A fan on Reddit wrote, “I miss the cole slaw SO MUCH.” When a Georgia location shared the recipe, one customer replied, “People want it back! Best coleslaw ever!”

Fried chicken and slaw belong together. Nearly every great chicken restaurant knows this. Walk into almost any Southern chicken joint, or any of the national chicken chains, and you’ll find a cup of cool, creamy slaw beside the bird. It’s a pairing, not a garnish. The cold crunch cuts through the hot, rich chicken, and a bite of slaw resets your palate for the next bite of sandwich. You make the best chicken in America. It deserves its best partner.

Then there’s the sweet-and-salty thing. Anyone who has dragged a salty waffle fry through a little sweet, tangy slaw dressing knows exactly what we mean. Salty fry, sweet cream, crunchy cabbage. It’s one of those combinations you didn’t know you needed until it was taken away.

You’ve listened before. When fans spoke up, you brought back the original barbecue sauce. When customers pushed back in 2023, you saved the side salad. You’ve told us you never wanted to disappoint anybody. We believe you, and we’re asking you to prove it one more time.

The recipe already exists. So does the demand. The original Dwarf House still serves it. You’ve shared the recipe with the public. Bring it back as a seasonal side, a limited-time return, or a test in a few markets, and let the sales tell you what your fans have been telling you for a decade.

We’ll be first in line. We’ll order the slaw with our nuggets, our sandwiches, and yes, our waffle fries.

Sincerely,
Your loyal slaw subjects
