We have reached a major milestone with the petition:
1800 signatures
That is a truely significant effort but we need to take it to the next level to break through the important number of 2500. That is the number of votes it takes to be elected a Councillor in Dunedin.
So, I imagine that you have all looked through the video and the detailed history of the beach at stclairbeach.co.nz and realize that repairing that groyne will raise the beach 2-3 metres and stop coastal erosion plus will save us from the Billion dollar cost of Retreat.
Here is my challenge to you: Each of you get 1 extra person to sign and we'll be there. That is a number that the Council cannot ignore - 3600.
One of the DCC staff told me that I need tens of thousands of signatures but that's nonsense. If we can blitz 2500, that's huge. So please take up the challenge and Bring Back the Beach.
I will attach my favourite photo of the beach taken ~1990, when the groynes were well buried in sand.
You can see how wide the beach was where the groynes were. You can also see that the inner poles that stick ~3m out of the sand now were fully covered.
Next challenge is help me. In order to bring this issue to public attention, I am running for Mayor. I ask you to go to the Otago Daily Times poll and vote for me for Mayor. This is not an actual vote, just a facebook poll so it means little.
Currently I am just 1% away from coming 3rd and that is what I need to get the credibility and publicity to keep the beach in the public eye.
