Bring Back Snow Days

The Issue

We believe that it is unfair to force students to attend zoom classes during a major snow storm. Snow days have long been an important and cherished part of the primary and secondary educational experience. Having an unexpected break from school provides students with much needed relief from rigorous school work. During these unprecedented and incredibly stressful times, attending zooms amid a snow storm creates additional unnecessary stress and anxiety. Nearly anyone can agree that sitting on zoom for six hours straight is unpleasant, boring and certainly not healthy. Additionally, students may have other responsibilities such as shoveling or taking care of siblings so their parents can be essential workers. Many students are also anxious facing the high likelihood of losing power. When students lose power it will make it very difficult for them to attend zooms or even complete asynchronous work. The loss of power also disproportionally affects families who can't afford to have a generator. As a result, many students could fall behind in their classes, face increased stress and anxiety, and receive a lower quality of education. If Acton-Boxborough decided to give students a complete break from school, it would greatly benefit our community. We would all be able to enjoy our day off without worrying about losing power or needing to shovel; younger students would have the opportunity to enjoy a "snow day" which is an essential part of the childhood experience; and students in higher grades would get a much needed break from the continual stress of school. For these reasons, the AB community strongly urges the school district to discontinue its policy of having zoom classes and asynchronous work during major snow storms.
