The issue

Give our young softball players the opportunity to represent their region!

We are calling for the reinstatement of regional school softball opportunities for students 16-19 years of age.

School sport provides young athletes with more than just a game. It builds confidence, teamwork, friendships, discipline and pride in representing their school and region.

For many young athletes, regional school sport is an important part of their sporting journey. As players grow older, they deserve the opportunity to continue developing their skills, competing at a representative level and being recognised for their dedication to the sport.

Softball is a sport that brings communities together. Our young athletes dedicate countless hours to training and competing, often balancing school, work and other commitments. They deserve meaningful opportunities to continue their sporting pathways throughout their secondary school years. However, the recent decision to remove this platform for players aged 16 -19 years has left a significant void in the lives of aspiring softball players across our regions.

Research consistently demonstrates the positive impact that school sports have on young people's lives. Beyond the physical benefits, engaging in sports fosters personal growth, discipline, teamwork, and resilience. According to a study by the Aspen Institute, youth participation in sports is linked to higher self-esteem, a reduced likelihood of depression, and improved academic performance. By eliminating regional softball at the school level, we are denying our young athletes these vital life skills and experiences at a critical period in their development.

The decision to cut regional softball appears to have been made without considering the broader implications or seeking input from those most affected—students, parents, and coaches. In our town alone, around 120 students participated in regional softball every year, many of whom have expressed their disappointment and disillusionment with this abrupt policy change. Removing this opportunity undermines their ambition and can lead to a decrease in overall youth sports participation, which has been declining nationwide, according to a study by the Sports and Fitness Industry Association.

Our community, our children, deserve the chance to experience the camaraderie, competition, and challenges that come with regional school softball. Bringing it back sends a clear message that we value the holistic development of our youth and honors their commitment to the sport.

Join us in our mission to reinstate regional school softball for players 16-19 years. Sign this petition to ensure future generations can enjoy and benefit from the sport that has given so much to many of us.
