Bring back Play Now Player Control on Next-Gen Consoles

Bring back Play Now Player Control on Next-Gen Consoles
The Issue
Play Now Player Control has been one of the most unique and enjoyable game modes not only in NBA 2K history, but sports gaming history. It allowed players to control a single NBA athlete, emphasized team basketball, and provided a fun, competitive alternative to the Play Now Team Control, MyCareer and MyTeam game modes.
With recent NBA 2K releases on next-gen consoles, Player Control has been inconsistently supported, and ultimately removed. This has been frustrating for a large portion of the 2K community that prefers this mode specifically for its balance, realism, and lower reliance on micro-transactions.
Even in NBA 2K24 (the last release to include Player Control on next-gen) this mode maintained a large, active, and loyal community right up until the moment the servers shut down at 3:00 AM PST on December 31, 2025, more than two years after the game’s release! That alone speaks volumes about how meaningful Player Control is to fans.
When the 2K24 servers went dark, there was no communication, no acknowledgment, and no replacement for this mode. For many of us who consistently logged on night after night, the silence that followed was genuinely heartbreaking. A dedicated community disappeared overnight, not because interest faded, but because access was taken away.
Player Control wasn’t just about basketball, it was about the connections formed through competition. Over time, we developed real friendships, rivalries, and familiar matchups that kept us coming back night after night. We recognized names, remembered play styles, and felt part of an ongoing community.
With the servers shut down, those connections were suddenly and silently cut off. For many players, it didn’t just feel like losing a game mode, it felt like losing a shared space where meaningful relationships and memories were built.
We are calling on 2K Sports and the NBA 2K development team to:
Bring back Play Now Player Control on next-gen consoles
Commit to keeping the mode in future NBA 2K releases
Support it consistently with matchmaking, stability, and updates
This game mode has a loyal fan base that deserves to be heard. Removing it takes away a key way many fans enjoy NBA 2K. By restoring and committing to Player Control, 2K can show it listens to its community and values different play styles.
Let your voice be heard! Sign this petition to show 2K that Player Control matters, and it should never be taken away again.
