Bring Back Paper Towels in North Stafford High School Bathrooms

Bring Back Paper Towels in North Stafford High School Bathrooms
The Issue
In the early months of the 2023-2024 academic year, a small percentage of North Stafford High School students began using paper towels to clog toilets and sink drains to disrupt normal school operations. The absence of security cameras in the bathrooms made it difficult to identify and properly punish the students responsible for these disruptions. As a result, administration was forced to remove paper towels from the student bathrooms. Many students were displeased with the change, upset that they were being punished when many of them didn't even know it was happening. This mass punishment was unfair to the majority of the student body but was seen as the only reasonable solution at the time. Despite it solving the problem, removing the paper towels from the student bathrooms allowed many of the students to avoid being held accountable for their actions.
Not only was this decision unfair, but it was also unsanitary. Students are forced to use air hand dryers, which quickly spread germs and bacteria, and are also ineffective. Having paper towels in public bathrooms is crucial to promoting proper hygiene and preventing the spread of germs. While many people may believe that simply washing their hands is enough to prevent the spread of germs, paper towels play a crucial role in this process. Paper towels provide individuals with a way to effectively dry their hands after washing them, which is essential for removing excess moisture that can harbor bacteria and germs. By allowing students to properly dry their hands, the risk of contamination and transmission of illnesses within student bathrooms. Additionally, paper towels can be used as a barrier when touching commonly contaminated surfaces, further minimizing the spread of bacteria. Overall, having paper towels in student bathrooms contributes to maintaining a clean and sanitary environment that promotes good health practices among students.
With all of that being said, I’ve come up with a simple solution that will benefit all parties involved. It would be unreasonable to expect the administration to reinstate paper towels in our restrooms without the student body offering a compromise. I propose that we appeal to our administrators and request that paper towel stations be relocated to the hallways outside student bathrooms. This way any students who attempt to clog toilets, flood sinks, or use paper towels to cause any other form of disruption can be identified and properly punished. This will not only eliminate the mass punishment, but it will also increase hygiene and help make the bathrooms more sanitary.
