Bring Back Long-Unseen British TV Shows In Their Original Broadcast Versions
The Issue
We, the undersigned viewers and fans of British television, call on Channel 4, BBC Three (and the wider BBC), and ITV to release and properly license programmes that have been unavailable for years — and to do so in their original broadcast form.
The problem
Hundreds of shows commissioned or produced by these broadcasters have vanished from official platforms. They no longer appear on All 4, BBC iPlayer or ITVX. Many have never received a proper digital or physical release. Others surface only in altered versions: music replaced, episodes shortened, or sequences removed.
This is a loss for audiences, for the cultural record, and for the broadcasters themselves. Viewers cannot legally rewatch or discover these programmes. New generations miss out on work that helped define British TV. And locked-away titles generate no revenue from streaming, sales or international licensing.
What we are asking for
We urge Channel 4, BBC Three / BBC and ITV to:
Identify and prioritise programmes that have been unavailable on official platforms for several years, or that have never had a full digital or physical release.
Make these shows available again on All 4, BBC iPlayer and ITVX where rights permit.
Actively license them to other platforms, physical-media partners and international distributors so they can reach the widest possible audience.
Release the original broadcast versions — with the music that first aired, without cuts or significant alterations. Fans want the shows as they were originally transmitted, not re-edited or re-scored substitutes.
Be transparent about rights obstacles, restoration plans or remaining barriers so the public understands the status of individual titles.
Why this matters
British television’s archive is a major cultural asset. Keeping large parts of it inaccessible, or releasing it only in compromised form, diminishes that asset. Clear, original-version releases would reward existing fans, attract new viewers, and create fresh commercial opportunities.
We are ready to support official releases through viewing, purchases and positive engagement. What we ask in return is simple: give us the shows back — and give us the versions we first watched.
