The Issue

The topic of hats/headwear being endorsed on school grounds has been very controversial for a while now. Reasons would present themselves in the form of “It’s distracting” or “the student’s face can’t be seen from under them”, but for a small amount of time, hats were allowed and are still being vouched for. So why did we suddenly stop? Were there any consistent complaints when students were allowed to wear them during that time? I would often wear hats of my own and hadn’t once received any types of criticism, so when I returned to school for my 3rd year, I was distraught to see that the approval of wearing them had been shut down. If we bring hats back, what harm could it do more than benefit? Not only does it stand as a fashion statement for most (just as any other accessory does), it stands as a way for students to express themselves and be comfortable. “But what about students wearing earbuds and hiding them under their hats?”. That’s another potential issue with students wearing hats on school grounds, so my claim would be to try letting students wear hats for a week, and if there are evident signs of these actions, hats will be discontinued. If there are no signs shown and students are capable of behaving themselves, hats should be brought back. Let’s bring back our hats!
