The Issue

Dear British Rowing community and beyond,

We stand at a pivotal moment in the future of British Rowing. As athletes, coaches, supporters, and fans of this sport, we have witnessed the incredible achievements of our rowers on the world stage. But something is missing—a tradition that once stood as a beacon of excellence, determination, and opportunity for athletes of all body types: the GB Lightweight Rowing Squad.

Lightweight rowing has always embodied the heart of rowing's democratic spirit. It is about the underdogs, those who don't fit the mold of towering athletes but possess every bit of the heart, skill, and work ethic that defines a champion. These athletes train just as hard, sacrifice just as much, and represent the very best of what rowing has to offer. By removing the lightweight squad, we’ve taken away more than just a category—we’ve stripped away opportunities for those whose size doesn't define their potential.

We cannot allow these voices to be drowned out.

The GB Lightweight Rowing Squad was not just a team; it was a testament to the idea that hard work, passion, and perseverance could propel athletes of all shapes and sizes to victory. Every time we witnessed a lightweight athlete stand atop the podium, we saw the embodiment of resilience and dedication. This legacy is worth preserving for future generations of rowers who deserve the chance to represent their country regardless of their physical stature.

Reinstating the lightweight squad is more than a simple decision about competition—it is a statement about the inclusivity and diversity that rowing should champion. By sidelining lightweight athletes, we send a message that rowing is only for the tallest or strongest, when in reality, it is a sport built on unity, teamwork, and the pursuit of personal excellence.

We owe it to the next generation to provide pathways for every athlete who dreams of donning the GB vest, whether they are 6'5" or 5'10". We owe it to those rowers who continue to train, despite having been told that there is no place for them in the national setup. And we owe it to the legacy of British Rowing to foster an environment where excellence isn’t measured in centimeters but in spirit, drive, and determination.

Let’s not let lightweight rowing become a forgotten chapter of British Rowing’s history. Let’s bring back the GB Lightweight Rowing Squad and reinstate the belief that rowing is a sport for all, not just for a select few. In doing so, we will uphold the values of inclusivity, equality, and sporting excellence that make British Rowing great.

Please, join us in this movement. Stand with us, raise your voices, and let’s give these athletes the platform they deserve.

Bring back the GB Lightweight Rowing Squad!
