Today at Harmony Magnet Academy, many students wore pins that said “Save Dance” with the words “Justice for Jones” around the edge and an image of ballet shoes. These pins were meant to show support for the dance program. Some people may see this as a form of protest, but it was a silent expression and an example of students using their freedom of speech. Principal Brown decided to ban the pins and told students they had to take them off and put them away. Some students are saying this does not go against the student handbook. Students at Harmony should be allowed to peacefully express their concerns about this new dance policy, especially since students were given no say in the decision to remove dance and combine it with more engineering based classes. Dance is part of the performing arts, and taking it away affects many students. Parents, please speak up for your children. Teachers at Harmony are also very upset about this new change and have said that the only way to change this is for parents to call and complain. Let’s save dance. Let’s save Harmony.
