The Issue

Big Brother Canada is a reality show that has helped and inspired so many people. It is a 24/7 live social experiment wherein people form alliances, compete, and evict one houseguest every week. It is a fascinating experience that has touched many people, and has amassed a large fanbase online. Unfortunately, on February 23rd, 2023, it was announced that they will be cancelling the live feeds and replacing them with pre-recorded videos. This is an affront to everything that Big Brother stands for and in this petition, I will be outlining why this is a bad idea.

1) Problematic Behaviour will be hidden

Some Big Brother houseguests can be very nasty. We saw this with the treatment towards Big Brother 24 winner Queen Taylor Hale. Furthermore, seasons like Big Brother 15 and many others have seen Black houseguests and others experience microaggressions, most of which have taken place on the live feeds and have not been shown on the episodes. Removing the live feeds allows houseguests to hide their bad behaviour, escape responsibility, and blame-shift. Imagine if we did not have live feeds to shed light on the problematic behaviour of houseguests in the past, they would have not been held accountable for their bullying and they would have been able to continue to terrorize their targets. After all, it was only after online backlash that some of the houseguests stopped mistreating other houseguests. Live feeds create transparency and allow for viewers to get an accurate view of what is happening in the house. When we do not have this, it's easier for the troubled houseguests to deny their bad behaviour and blame the actual victims.

2) Inaccurate edits:

For far too long, many Big Brother seasons have been impacted by inaccurate edits. This is inevitable when editors are forced to fit days of footage into a consumable forty-minute episode. Unfortunately, this leads to much context being omitted from the episode and does not allow for more casual viewers to know what is really going on the house. The live feeds allow for unfettered access to the houseguests' conversations, and allows viewers the opportunity to see content that has not made it to the episode. Dallies of BBCAN live feed content is not sufficient because it is a mere curation of the events that occur in the Big Brother Canada house. Furthermore, it does not allow us to have an intimate understanding of the houseguests and takes away the ability for fans to be interactive with the happenings of the house, which leads to the third point.

3) Excitement/Online Engagement will be greatly diminished

Removing Big Brother Canada live feeds greatly diminishes excitement and online engagement. Big Brother live feeds are spontaneous, fluid and the dynamics of the game shift greatly on a moment's notice. Taking away the spontaneity and dynamism of the live feeds, and switching to pre-recorded and curated video will greatly hamper the excitement that fans have towards the game of Big Brother. Big Brother is an experience that is not only shaped by the hosts, houseguests and production team, it is an experience that is elevated by the fans. The Big Brother fanbase is active on Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, blogs like JokersUpdates, and a plethora of other social media networks.

YouTube channels like Rob Has A Podcast and other commentary channels generate engagement and discussion about the show. Having a pre-recorded curated video is boring and undermines the intention of the show -- a 24/7 live social experiment.

Conclusion:

As such, the future of the game is at stake as houseguests will be able to hide problematic behaviour, editors will be able to control the narrative, and the excitement/online engagement towards the show will be greatly diminished if live feeds are removed. Now is the time for Global TV and Chorus Entertainment to act expeditiously and save the Big Brother that we know and love. Fans, I hope we can band together to save our show. Share and spread the love that we have for our show. Now is our time!
