A recent study found that the presence of "moderate effect" genes can cause Autism without learning disabilities. This highly suggests that what was previously known as Asperger's is an entirely different disorder than what was previously diagnosed as low-functioning autism. This would mean that autism is less of a spectrum and more of an umbrella term for different disorders that happen to share symptoms. This is a huge discovery and could change how we define autism forever. As a result of the discovery, it is even more vital that we separate the diagnoses again.
