Bring back Amerijet flights from SJU to EWR for at-risk dogs
The Issue
FlyDogzPR is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that helps rescue dogs leave Puerto Rico by connecting volunteers who are already traveling to and from the island with small dogs that can fly in-cabin (pet-in-cabin fees are covered by rescues or adopters). This model allows hundreds of small dogs to reach safety each year.
However, medium/large dogs cannot fly in-cabin (due to size and weight requirements) and can only travel via cargo. Cargo options out of Puerto Rico are already extremely limited and very costly.
Puerto Rico is home to an estimated 650,000 stray dogs on an island the size of Connecticut. The need is overwhelming, and access to reliable transport is one of the biggest barriers to saving lives.
Until recently, Amerijet provided cargo flights from San Juan (SJU) to Newark (EWR), one of the most critical routes for rescue organizations because the New York and New Jersey region has a large network of fosters and adopters. Amerijet has now stopped offering cargo transport to Newark, NJ.
As a result, rescues and independent rescuers are forced to route large dogs through Miami and then arrange costly ground transportation to the Northeast. This adds significant financial burden, increases travel time and stress on the animals, and directly limits how many dogs can be saved. Many small rescues simply cannot absorb these extra costs.
We are respectfully asking Amerijet to reinstate at least one to two cargo flights per month from San Juan (SJU) to Newark (EWR) for animal transport. Even limited access would make a meaningful, lifesaving difference for large dogs who otherwise have no way off the island.
This is not about convenience. This is about the capacity to save lives. We urge supporters, animal lovers, and compassionate individuals alike to sign this petition. Your signature can help rescues across the island continue its mission of hope and save countless lives.
Together, we can make a difference. ✈️
