For many years, I've called New York City my home. I, like many others, consider it a great city - a true cultural melting pot brimming with art and diversity. But there is a stark void in our city - the absence of an alternative rock FM radio station. I'm not alone in this feeling. Many fellow New Yorkers are avid fans of alternative rock music and miss radio stations like 92.3 and 101.9.

Despite being home to over 8.4 million people, NYC surprisingly lacks an alternative rock FM radio station. According to Neilsen, rock is America's top music genre, with a 30% share in music consumption across the country in 2020 (Source: Neilsen Music/MRC Data, 2020). It's hard to comprehend that a city as vibrant and artistically diverse as NYC does not cater to a significant portion of music lovers searching for tunes outside mainstream pop music.

We often express our passion for alternative rock through concerts, music stores, and online platforms. But this cannot fully replace the missing piece - a dedicated FM radio station. This petition calls on broadcast media companies, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and local government to bring back an alternative rock FM station to our city, NYC. We aim for a platform where individuals can discover emerging bands, connect over shared musical interests, and relish the dynamic tunes of alternative rock.
