My heart aches every day knowing that my 18-year-old son, on his first ever charge, has been sentenced to a juvenile life sentence at the Swanson Center for Youth in Monroe, Louisiana. He was charged with assault with a firearm, which was tragically upgraded to second-degree attempted murder. No parent should endure the anguish of seeing their child confined under such severe conditions at a place meant for rehabilitation, not punishment.

The Swanson Center for Youth has been plagued with reports of neglect, abuse, and misconduct for far too long. The facility has countless allegations of malfeasance, including inadequate staffing, improper training of personnel, and a dangerous environment that fails to educate or reform the youth it houses. Reports and testimonies highlight a pattern of behavior among staff that undermines the very purpose of juvenile correctional facilities, leading instead to exacerbated trauma and further criminal behavior among the youth.

The residents of Shreveport, and indeed all of Louisiana, deserve to know the truth about what goes on behind the walls of the Swanson Center. It's crucial that we bring these issues to the attention of the Governor of Louisiana. Immediate action is needed to investigate these allegations fully, ensure accountability, and implement reforms that prioritize the rehabilitation and well-being of young inmates.

We propose establishing an independent oversight committee to conduct regular inspections and provide transparent reports on the conditions within the facility. Furthermore, implementing comprehensive training programs for all staff members in trauma-informed care and conflict resolution techniques is essential for creating a safe environment conducive to growth and change.
