ATSF Texan 5021 was retired from service in 1959, Saved by the AT-SF as part of their heritage fleet at Belen, NM, 5021 only moved out of the Belen Roundhouse once a month to keep her axles and pistons lubricated. After only 13 years her boiler went cold and her wheels never ran under her own steam again. In 1986 ATSF 5021 was graciously donated to the California State Railroad Museum and there was hope 5021 would finally come back to steam, Unfortunately that never happened and 5021 was left on a siding of the SPR after all her collectable parts had been removed, where she fell victim to graffiti artists. In 2016 5021 got a new coat of paint but she still sits outside the museum with her Belen Roundhouse stall mate 2925. we ask that the CSRM allows a group of volunteers who will be dubbed as "friends of 5021" be allowed to volunteer and raise funds to bring her back to steam under their stewardship all while remaining in the museums ownership.
