Bring an Okanagan Regional Library Branch to Glenmore

The Issue

Our community needs an Okanagan Regional Library (ORL) branch in Glenmore. Having access to library services is crucial for personal development and community growth. Libraries are more than just repositories of books; they provide access to information resources, foster lifelong learning and serve as hubs for community engagement.

I am a resident of Glenmore, Kelowna, BC, Canada and, like the rest of this community, I'm severely underserved by the ORL. The lack of a neighborhood ORL branch forces me to drive at least 20 minutes to the nearest one, located downtown. This not only incurs parking costs but also contributes to the city's traffic congestion. Moreover, as someone with physical challenges, I often can't get across town in time to pick up holds and have to let the materials go for the next person. When I can make it, these trips are costly, strenuous, and time-consuming.

According to Statistics Canada (2019), over 23% of Kelowna's population has some form of disability. This highlights the need for accessible public services within close proximity. Additionally, research indicates that libraries can play a significant role in reducing social isolation among seniors and individuals with disabilities.

The lack of library services is not just an inconvenience; it is a barrier that prevents equal access to information and resources that should be available to all taxpayers per the ORL mandate "to provide equity of access to the tools of discovery, learning, creation, and connection. Regardless of ethnicity, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, ability, wealth, or social status..." yet only those in Mission, downtown, and Rutland have branches. These are not just basic branches—they have full library services. Glenmore doesn’t have even the bare minimum of a vending machine to pick up holds and a drop box for returning materials.

By establishing a branch in Glenmore, the ORL can provide equity and improve accessibility for all residents while also reducing our carbon footprint by minimizing unnecessary travel across town.

We urge the ORL board and local government officials to consider this proposal seriously. Please sign this petition if you support bringing an Okanagan Regional Library branch closer to home - right here in Glenmore!
