Bring Accountability & Transparency to the Uniondale Community Center
The Issue
We, the undersigned residents/taxpayers of the Uniondale Community as of May, 2024, call for transparency and accountability to govern the future of 925 Jerusalem Ave. Building. The community center holds immense potential to serve as a hub for diversity, inclusivity, and resource provision for all members of our community. However, we believe that the current structure and mission of the center do not adequately reflect the needs and aspirations of our diverse population and that of the Uniondale Community.
We the Uniondale Community, request that the Uniondale Empowerment Resource Center Committee on Oversight Accountability & Transparency (U.E.R.C Oversight Committee Board) represent the Uniondale Community by implementing the following as it pertains to 925 Jerusalem Ave., Uniondale NY 11553
1. Renaming and Restructuring:
● We demand that the center be renamed by U.E.R.C Oversite Committee Board to reflect the diversity and inclusivity of our community. The new name should embody our values and serve as a beacon of unity and empowerment.
● The mission and purpose of the U.E.R.C. Oversite Committee Board should be defined to prioritize the needs of all community members, including seniors, children, veterans, families, business owners, local organizations, and entrepreneurs.
Inclusive Board of Members:
● We call for the establishment of a term board of members of U.E.R.C. that includes representatives from all segments of our community. This board should be diverse, inclusive, and reflective of the demographics of Uniondale.
● One seat on the board of U.E.R.C Oversight Committee Board should be reserved for a community member selected through an inclusive process to ensure that the voices of all residents are heard and represented.
3. Oversight Board:
● We request that U.E.R.C Oversight Committee Board be responsible for ensuring the ongoing success for accountability, and transparency of the community center.
● The U.E.RC Oversight Committee Board consist of active community members in charge of daily operations, planning, and scheduling of the calendar of events, workshops, and programming.
● A calendar database will be established by U.E.R.C. Oversight Committee Board and made available and accessible to its administrators.
● The U.E.R.C Oversight Committee Board will manage bank accounts, bookkeeping, grants, funding, and scholarship oversight, as well as operations and administration.
● Responsibilities of the U.E.R.C. Oversight Committee Board will also include maintenance and building upkeep, yearly compliance checks, and record-keeping of meetings, minutes, filing of tax returns and public announcements.
4. Addendum to Building Lease
● We the Uniondale Community request that the U.E.R.C Oversight Committee Board be included on the lease of the property as building and property managers with an added Addendum to the current lease.
● We also request that no more alterations/addendums be added to the original lease until the term lease has ended at the 10 year mark or only with the written approval by the President of the U.E.R.C Oversight Committee Board.
We request that U.E.R.C Oversight Committee Board represent the Uniondale Community for all negoiations as it pertains to lease renewals or building contracts to secure the interest of the Uniondale Community in the future
