Bring a Work-Ahead Learning System to all DSD Secondary Schools
The Issue
At Farmington High School, students have been using Summit as opposed to Canvas to complete their learning. Whilst Summit has several notable problems, a major benefit is the ability for students to complete all work for a semester ahead of time.
Currently, teachers who use the Canvas LMS only reveal assignments at certain points in time throughout the semester. This system only allows students to have all currently released assignments in on time at best, and at worst, have numerous assignments missing. If all assignments were released at the start of a semester, students could be completely done with all out-of-school assignments within a month, and only be burdened by in-school work for their semesters.
As a student within the district, I know that a large number of students would take advantage of this and just get their work done at the start of a semester. Many of us choose to procrastinate or ignore work because we have activities outside of school, and we can't predict what our workloads will look like. The school board will try to argue that it's important to complete work on schedule with a teacher, but we know that this argument is irrelevant because the system has been working at Farmington. Why not roll it out to the whole district? We don't live in 1960s America where true, academic learning could only occur in a school building, we live in the 2020s where the current generation can learn more effectively using online resources at their own pace.
If the opportunity to work ahead was given to all Davis School District secondary students, it would give them a significantly better insight into how to manage their time throughout the semester, as well as give them the ability to finish classes faster, giving them time to complete the numerous extra-curricular activities that a majority of them are engaged in.
We need to raise awareness of this problem among students and parents because the lack of being able to work ahead is hindering many students' ability to succeed in our antiquated school system. The school board needs to recognize this and take steps to make our district's schooling more accessible & effective and modernize the current teaching system that they use.
