Bring a D1 Women's Wrestling Program to UMD

Bring a D1 Women's Wrestling Program to UMD
The Issue
Women's Wrestling is currently the fastest growing sport in the US at both the High School and Collegiate level. In 2025 it became the 91st sport added as an NCAA Championship. However, there are still only four total D1 women's wrestling programs, with only one being on the East coast and only one being in the Big Ten. It has become increasingly hard for young female athletes to find schools that meet all of their academic and social expectations and still pursue their athletic careers.
By adding Women's Wrestling to their athletic programs UMD would become a pioneer for women's wrestling and for female sports across the country. It would open a whole new route for women looking to compete in college and could quickly become one of the most competitive wrestling programs nationally. Additionally, with UMD's renown as a new "public ivy" and it's reputation for academic success it would open the door for women to compete in athletics while still pursuing rigorous programs and degrees.
Maryland wrestling, and Maryland women's wrestling in specific has been growing in the past few years. From the addition of a Women's State tournament, to most counties having Female Counties, to studs like Alex Szkotnicki (World Champ), Nebi Tsarni (3x Fargo National Champion), and Taina Fernandez (currently only a sophomore in highschool and a World Champion) Maryland is at the top of the women's wrestling scene right now. These women should have colleges that they are excited to attend that allow them to continue to compete in the sport they love. If UMD were to add a Women's Wrestling program it would continue to grow the sport to new heights.
