INCLUDE White Voices in Race and Ethnicity Classes at BYU
The Issue
Race and Ethnicity classes are built on white criticism. A racist concept that only criticizes white people. I took these classes as an undergraduate and graduate student at BYU. I can tell you from experience that they caused myself and other white students in the class to feel ashamed and belittled because of our skin color, and angry at the racist bias the classes present. Why did we deserve to feel that way simply because our skin is white? Would you want your sons and daughters to feel that way about themselves?
There is now a petition by a Latino student to have these classes mandatory for graduation. But Latinos aren't the target of these classes. Whites are.
These classes only criticize whites and paint all minorities as victims.
These classes ignore racism and violence towards whites.
These classes are not science, but bigotry.
Obviously if in my class alone, they caused students to feel this way, they most likely did in other classes as well. But white students are afraid to speak up because they are punished for doing so. We have all seen news accounts of whites being treated like racists and terrorized as such on false pretenses. Being treated like racists, or racial abuse, is something only whites face. This concept is also ignored in these classes.
Is it Christian to promote racist attitudes all in the name of racial justice?
Is it just to shame whites today for the wrongs of some whites in the past?
Is it just to only highlight white wrongs, and ignore wrongs committed by blacks, Latinos, and other races?
These classes make a stain on every university who teaches them, and more especially a university based on the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Classes like these encourage white-shaming, and can lead to violence towards whites as we are now seeing in America.
We are better than this! INCLUSIVITY shouldn't EXCLUDE whites. It's time we include WHITE VOICES and stop pretending equality only applies to non-whites!
