Ban the last race

The issue

Every year more than 4,000 racing horses go missing. Where do these horses go you ask yourself? They go to abattoirs, where they are shoved into tiny pens with no room to move. In these pens they are abused with polypipe and electric shockers. Horses as young as two years old are killed at abattoirs around Australia. ABC conducted an interview with Professor McGreevy and he states "According to the racing industry less than 1 per cent are ending up at a knackery or an abattoir. The industry tells us that 0.4 per cent of horses leaving the racing industry are ending up in a knackery or an abattoir, which I think equates to 34 horses per year," Professor McGreevy said "That's what the industry is assuring us of. But those assurances are unreliable. The figures don't add up," he said. If my concerns are substantiated, then we're talking about a large number of horses that are meeting a very violent and inhumane end to their lives. He said the number of horses disappearing each year could be in the thousands." As a fellow horse owner I understand what the quality of having a horse is like. My family run an equestrian farm and one out of twenty horses are x-race horses. Now I know that the showjumping industry are taking in x-race horses, but this is NOT enough. Slaughter of our equine athletes needs to end. We need to ban this issue now, take it out of the equation. We need to defend the horses from what they can't defend themselves from.
