STOP HOUSE BILL 1987 Makes it legal to kill free roaming cats, community cats, stray cats
Why this petition matters
House Bill 1987 targets "free roaming cats" also known as "community cats" also known as "stray cats." The proponents of this bill claim that these homeless cats are responsible for the death of bird species. I have cared for over 100 homeless cats in the downtown area for three years, and I can guarantee they are not killing any birds. Hawaii leads the nation in animal abuse and murdering these innocent cats is not going to stop the source of the problem which is irresponsible pet ownership. The majority of homeless cats are not "feral." They used to have a home and, for one reason or another, they were abandoned. It's not the cats' fault. It's the human's fault. House Bill 1987 is barbaric and inhumane. This is not something that should even be considered in a first-world country. Hawaii is better than that and as soon as tourists found out about this they will cross Hawaii off of their list. The TNR program helps reduce the free-roaming cat population in a humane way, but this will not stop the amount of irresponsible pet owners in Hawaii due to a lack of laws and regulations concerning animal abuse and pet welfare.
