The Issue

Inmates are left with no option to self quarantine or protect themselves from the wide spreading Novel Coronavirus. Detention center staff are asked, but not required to take self quarantining measures and risk bringing the disease into over populated, confined quarters. This creates a breeding ground for this deadly virus and to assume that inmates are not high risk is inhumane. Please consider releasing all non violent inmates and detainees. Many need to be home with their families where they will have a stronger chance of surviving this pandemic and supporting their loved ones during this crisis. I truly believe that many of these individuals have experienced a sentence like none before them being locked away from their families while watching the world shut down around them. Many of these facilities are non medical facilities with limited medical staff and are simply not equipped to handle a sudden outbreak of COVID19 amongst the dozens of inmates it houses. While these inmates are shut off from public, they are still at the mercy of any staff member who could potentially carry the virus into the facility. Many of these inmates have underlying medical conditions and are being stripped of their rights to self quarantine. Please, give these individuals a chance to survive this pandemic.
