Costa Mesa: Renovate Brentwood Park

The Issue

We are writing today to ask for your consideration to complete and implement a NEW Master Plan for Brentwood Park, which is our neighborhood park and a place near and dear to our hearts.  You may be familiar with the master plan, which was designed in 2009 but never implemented. The plan can be viewed here:

When we stumbled upon this plan, we were thrilled!  We’ve been hoping for some time that the park would be renovated. It has been over 10 years.....  We visit Brentwood Park regularly and haven’t seen any major improvements since. Other than a bike rack, which no one uses. For over 10 years this park has been neglected. It is time for a NEW MASTER PLAN and for actual action in redeveloping the heart of our neighborhood.

The play structures are old, paint is chipping, plastic elements are degraded, there is no shade, no places for elderly to sit, no accessible / paved walkways. The structures are out of date and quite frankly, dangerous. It's mostly sand under the play structures, and with the surrounding trees there are often broken sticks in the sand.  The sand volleyball court is rarely utilized, and I suspect it's because of these sticks which make it uncomfortable to play barefoot.  The path running through the park is overgrown with grass and is often muddy.  There are no swings, minimal benches and seating areas, and there isn’t much to the park in terms of multiple use space. There is a lot of grass, which could be replaced with multiple uses, walkways, and drought tolerant native plants as illustrated by the, now out of date, 2009 Master Plan.

Additionally, there is no safe way to access the park from the north (where most residents walk from). Traffic on Monte Vista travels very fast (often speeding). There is no crosswalk, no speed bumps, and no safe accessible walkway for residents from the surrounding neighborhood. We have asked multiple times for the city to install a stop sign, speed bumps, a crosswalk, anything to help with the safety of our children. We truly believe this is an accident waiting to happen.

We believe wholeheartedly that this spectacularly located space could be much better utilized by Costa Mesa residents. Brentwood Park could become a more functional, clean, green, and beautiful park for our community to treasure.

Local residents have even made a website dedicated to bringing attention to the plight of Brentwood Park. https://brentwoodpark.info/

We love Costa Mesa and appreciate all that you do for our city. It is time to take action and help improve Brentwood Park. Time to make it safe and enjoyable for your residents. Your time and consideration is greatly appreciated!
