Within the past month and ever since the installation of new "flashing yellow" lights at the intersection of Southport Road and State Road 37 there has been 1 fatal accident and another serious personal injury accident. While the attempt to add these signals to relieve traffic congestion is admirable; it is not nearly enough to alleviate the congestion caused by the addition of a large apartment complex, planned retail, and a newly constructed church. A 72 year old has already lost her life and countless others take their own lives into their hands on a daily basis because the State wants to wait until I-69 is constructed and the City won't budge or fund improvements until the State decides the future. How much does a human life cost to the City of Indianapolis or the State of Indiana? Surely not more than the improvements needed to save a life. As a resident within a quarter of a mile from this intersection I have to deal with this congestion on a daily basis. It is only a matter of time before someone I know or love is involved in an accident at this dangerous intersection.
