Open our Seattle Public Schools Playgrounds
The Issue
Our communities need the school playgrounds to reopen for students and other neighborhood children to use when schools or aftercare is not in session.
Many neighborhoods don’t have playgrounds that are within walking distance, and families have relied on school playgrounds to meet the needs of their children. The city of Seattle reopened city playgrounds in October, by posting Covid safety rules, and it’s time for SPS to do the same.
Studies have shown that the risk of transmitting Covid-19 on playground equipment is very low, and with masking and social distancing rules in place, it should be safe for everyone to play.
By opening school playgrounds, all playgrounds will become less crowded, making play safer for everyone.
We are asking Brent Jones, incoming Seattle Public Schools Superintendent, and the SPS School Board to reopen school playgrounds immediately.
