BRAVE SOFTWARE STOP PROVIDING A REVENUE STREAM FOR WHITE SUPREMACIST PAEDOPHILES
The Issue
Brave Software is a new web browser set up, in 2015, by the ex co-founder and CEO of the Mozilla project, Brendan Eich. To promote this new browser, Brave Software have come up with a strategy to attract more users by promoting companies and organisations on their platform and providing them with a way to make money. Any company or organisation that signs up to their program can encourage their users to “Give the new Brave Browser a try” and in exchange Brave will “contribute” funds to the company/organisation for each person who downloads their browser.
On 9th June 2019, Spotlight Newspaper contacted the CEO of Brave Software, Brendan Eich, to ask why his company was promoting and providing a revenue stream for Kiwi Farms, a forum of neo-Nazi White supremacist Incels, founded by Joshua Conner Moon, who openly advocate paedophilia, the rape and mutilation of young girls, the mutilation of Jews and the genocide of all Muslims. Members of this community support ableism and attack a wide range of minority groups including the trans community, people who are mentally ill, autistic or physically disabled, non-whites and pretty much anyone who isn’t their idea of ‘superior’. After a number of heated public Twitter exchanges where Eich repeatedly attempted to condescend and belittle the person reporting the complaint and, on one occasion, even referred to them as “self-righteous”, the promotion page was eventually taken down on the 12th June cutting off the Kiwi Farms revenue stream.
However, after only a month, Joshua Moon had set up another page, for his new cyberbullying podcast (Mad at the Internet). So, on 10th July 2019, Spotlight Newspaper contacted Brendan Eich, again, to ask why his company, Brave Software, was now promoting and providing a revenue stream for Joshua Conner Moon’s new forum. A senior member of the team replied explaining that the process was ‘automatic’. In other words, anyone can set up multiple accounts on the Brave platform without having to go through even the most basic verification process. When we explained that the new page had been set up by Joshua Moon, using a different company name, instead of acting immediately, Brave Software decided to ignore all our communications. They were contacted multiple times over the following week (on the 12th, 13th, 17th and 18th July) but completely refused to respond to any questions or requests for updates
It’s now mid-October, we’ve still had no response from Brave Software, Joshua Conner Moon’s new page is still live on the Brave platform and he’s been allowed to raise funds for the last 3 months. Brave have allowed this to happen, despite the copious amounts of information they’ve been provided with on Moon’s cyberbullying activity (which has been linked to 5 suicides to date), his very public support for white supremacist terrorists, his openly promoting paedophilia and advocating the rape and mutilation of young girls, his posts advocating mutilating Jews and the genocide of all Muslims. Asides from the information we’ve provided them with, there’s also an incredible amount of information on Joshua Conner Moon and Kiwi Farms available widely on the internet. Of course this was sufficient information for them to be forced to take down the Kiwi Farms page but because ‘Mad at the Internet’ is not as well known as Kiwi Farms and most people don’t realise that it was set up by Joshua Conner Moon or that it’s linked to Kiwi Farms, Brave have allowed it to stand and they’ve allowed Moon to continue to have access to a revenue stream to fund his sickening activities.
Why would they allow this to happen, you might ask? Well, we’ve now discovered that there might be a rather sinister reason as to why Brave Software have taken the decision to continue to platform Joshua Moon and why they’ve decided to ignore our repeated requests for action.
Brave Software was set up by Brendan Eich, who was also a co-founder of the Mozilla project but just days after his appointment as CEO in 2014, Mozilla learnt that Eich had donated $1,000 to a campaign to get same-sex marriage banned in California and forced him to step down as CEO. Eich left Mozilla to set up Brave Software the following year. We’ve also recently learned that Eich donated thousands of dollars to right wing Republican candidates Ron Paul and Pat Buchanan in the 1990s. Both men hold highly controversial opinions about homosexuality, gender relations, immigration and race… views not too dissimilar to Joshua Conner Moon and many other white supremacists and we’ve also learnt that the Brave browser accommodates other far right groups. For example, they host Gab’s Browser Extension (a far-right social media platform referred to as a “hotbed of hate speech” and which has already been banned by Firefox and Chrome).
Joshua Moon’s activities have been concerning enough for him to be banned by a number of other internet companies and services like PayPal, Uphold, Authorize.Net, Mastercard, Visa, Patreon, Hatreon, Google, RedBubble, Bitcoin mining syndicates, VK, Stream.me, DLive.tv, and YouTube. It’s hard not to conclude therefore that Brave Software’s unique selling point (USP) appears to be that they are happy to promote and provide a revenue stream for white supremacists and others who have been rightfully rejected by most other platforms, including people who advocate paedophilia, rape, mutilation and genocide and who celebrate suicide and neo-Nazi terrorism. Given that their CEO, Brendan Eich, actually appears to share many of the same right wing extremist values and directly funds right wing campaigns and politicians who share these values, this should come as no surprise.
