Breckenridge should not hurt small businesses and property rights with a cap on STRs
The Issue
The Town of Breckenridge is planning to reduce the number of short term rentals. This action will be detrimental in many ways including:
Job Loss - A reduction of vacation rentals means a reduction in jobs. For every three vacation rentals lost, one job will be lost. Front desk agents, housekeepers, inspectors, hot tub techs, snow removers, etc. These locals are vital to our community and don't deserve to lose their jobs.
Small Business Impact - For every dollar that a visitor spends on lodging, two more dollars are spent in our local economy. Our amazing restaurants, delightful shops, and charming activity providers rely on these visitors. Reducing vacation rentals will reduce visitors and many small businesses will be forced to close.
Second Homeowners - Breckenridge is a second home for many families who have invested in our community because they love it as much as we do. Taking away their ability to offset their expenses by renting will drive many of them away. Their properties are not designed for year round living and the costs are out of reach for most locals. Instead, they will be sold to the uber rich who can afford to leave the property vacant most of the year when they aren't using it; Breckenridge will become a ghost town.
Visitors - Visitors are the heart of the character of our community and their love for Breckenridge drives demand and visitation to our town, not the amount of vacation rentals. Reducing the number of vacation rentals will only serve to push vacationers to other areas as well as make way for more day trippers who don't invest in our economy like overnight visitors do.
This action by the Town Council is bad for employees, bad for small businesses, bad for second homeowners, bad for visitors, and bad for Breckenridge. Join us in saying NO! to a cap on vacation rentals.
