Breathe Free, Baguio: Take Action Against Air Pollution

Baguio City, known as the “Summer Capital of the Philippines,” faces increasing air pollution caused by traffic congestion, open burning of waste, and smoke from nearby industrial areas. Many residents, especially children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions, are experiencing health issues such as asthma, chronic cough, and allergies. This problem is made worse by poorly enforced regulations and lack of public awareness about pollution control.

Despite Baguio’s reputation as a clean and green city, air quality has been steadily declining. Families report more frequent hospital visits due to respiratory illnesses. Students struggle to concentrate in school during heavy smog days, and local workers face reduced productivity due to poor health. Without immediate action, Baguio risks losing its natural charm, harming the health of its citizens, and affecting tourism, which the city heavily relies on.

To address this, we propose the following solutions and strongly call on local authorities to implement them:

  • Strict Traffic Regulation – Introduce carpooling incentives, enforce stricter vehicle emission checks, and create alternative traffic routes to reduce congestion and vehicle emissions.
  • Public Awareness Campaigns – Launch educational programs in schools and communities to teach proper waste disposal, discourage open burning, and raise awareness about the health impacts of air pollution.
  • Greening Initiatives – Expand urban tree planting, maintain and improve public parks, and encourage rooftop gardens to naturally filter the air and improve overall air quality.
  • Monitoring & Reporting – Install additional air quality monitoring stations and develop a public app where residents can report pollution hotspots in real-time, enabling faster response and enforcement.
  • Collaboration with Local Industries – Work closely with factories, construction companies, and other industrial sources to reduce smoke, dust, and harmful emissions through cleaner practices and stricter compliance with environmental standards.

We call on local authorities of Baguio City to actively implement these measures to protect public health, preserve the environment, and ensure a cleaner, safer city for all residents and visitors. Immediate action is crucial to safeguard the well-being of the community and maintain Baguio’s reputation as a healthy and beautiful city.

ICT plays a vital role in spreading awareness and mobilizing support for this campaign. Online petitions allow us to reach thousands of residents, tourists, and concerned citizens globally. Social media platforms amplify our message, create real-time engagement, and help track community feedback. Digital tools also allow us to collect data on pollution, monitor government responses, and coordinate advocacy events efficiently. By leveraging technology, we make environmental advocacy more interactive, transparent, and impactful.

We, the citizens and supporters of a healthier Baguio, urge our local government, schools, businesses, and communities to take immediate steps to reduce air pollution. Sign this petition to demand cleaner air policies, stricter enforcement of environmental laws, and public programs that prioritize health over convenience. Together, we can breathe freely and ensure Baguio remains a safe, green, and livable city for everyone.

Let’s use digital platforms not just to report pollution, but to protect our city. Together, we can ensure that Baguio remains a safe, clean, and healthy city for everyone.

Baguio’s air is our right, not a privilege.

Let’s advocate for cleaner streets, greener spaces, and responsible community action.

Support clean air. Protect our future.
