BREAK THE SILENCE - MENS COURAGE IN MENTAL HEALTH
The Issue
Hi I’m Becky peeke ,
I need to share my deepest concern about mens mental health, over the years i have noticed that the statistics of male suicide is getting higher and higher and nothing has been put in place.
In the uk and wales, men die at a rate which is 4 times greater than women.
In 2022 there was 5,642 registered deaths by suicide in the uk and wales, an average of 15 suicides per day.
5656 - 6014 suicides were registed in 2023 - that is 372 more than in 2022 .
The overall suicide rate was 11.2 per 100,000 compared to females.
Males younger than 35, 45-49 were found to have the highest suicide rate.
Mens mental illness usually gets pushed aside and are less likely to receive any professional help and to get the appropriate medication, and therapy
Due to many reasons and one of them is the pressure to (man up) - (toughen up)
(real men dont cry).
The stigma of men speaking out is that it is seen as a form of weakness or not "manly"
Men as we know it are unlikely to speak up and speak about how they are feeling due to the very reason ive stated above.
We need to be able to validate mens feelings and getting the right care that they are in dire need for.
There should be more than just giving out PILLS! or talking about FEELINGS because we have already heard it OVER and OVER again!!
But yet men are still too embarrassed to speak out to a medical professional.
Doesnt this show you that the system we have set in place is simply not working!
How many more lives are we having to turn the blind eye be taken by this awful mental illness , when will this be
TAKEN SERIOUSLY!
We should be implementing an emergency care plan for men alone.
They should have a treatment plan what is discussed there and then when needed.
There should be medical experts who know exactly what they're talking about instead of just any worker whos not experienced any mental health battles and who just reads straight from the book !.
And better yet hiring people who do NOT frown upon men as if they are not equal!
Ive conducted an interview with 6 men and they've all shared similar answers!.
Here are some replies that I've been given.
Any time I've expressed how i feel its as if i get looked down on.
When trying to reach out, i don't get the appropriate approach.
When trying to talk , i get spoken over.
Over 6 million men suffer from depression every year, but male depression gets overlooked.
Its ignored!, its something
"To be ashamed off"
We need to encourage , support , defend, and protect our male citizens.
My heart is heavy for all those who are struggling and who have been told to keep QUIET!
I know we can make a change , we can make a difference - I’m honestly shocked that all over social media there’s very little on Men’s Health and their battles!.
How are we supposed to encourage our male population if no one is going to make a stand!!!
Help me with this petition and I will not let you down!
Men can cry too!!
Men can and should express how they feel without fear of judgment!!
Men are the best examples for our future!!
MEN HAVE A VOICE AND ITS TIME FOR THEM TO BE HEARD!!!
Statistics for men is
36% NHS referrals
56% would be worried about taking time off work.
46% would be too embarrassed to tell their employer
Leading cause of death is suicide by 80%
How can we as a community, a beloved and respected community just sleep on this issue.
I have many of male friends and relatives who do not get the support nor help from our government and lives have been lost , relationships have failed , feeling okay is not often enough.
Giving out love is even tougher when depression and anxiety is crippling over their body, so much hate and violence in the world and everyone wonders why “men” act out.
Most of the anxiety’s and depression come both into play , 80% of alcoholics have stated they drink to relieve the pain and anxiety , the sadness , the loss and void they feel inside - so they drink and drink till they’re numb.
Alcohol affects the brain where it lets of dopamine effect so that whoever is intoxicated is believing that their problems are getting better when drinking , when in reality it’s not it’s a short term fix which then leads to more many health problems!.
Goverments funding seems to lack more when it comes to men’s mental health and I’ve never felt more saddened to see , we all know all too well that our government loves money.
So instead of us having to building and paying for AA meetings and medical expenses which have increased with the increase of male depression the money could be going into correct treatment and therapy, so that there’s less alcoholics who are deeply struggling by this.
If there was more public announcements and support , men will be able to smile bigger, laugh a little louder , and share how they feel without being scared or judged!
It’s our time to act on this! And make this a massive priority!!
