Break DTE’s monopoly in Michigan

The Issue

Michigan families are at a breaking point. As a community member concerned about the well-being of our families and future, it pains me to see hardworking Michigander's grapple with relentless electric rate hikes and unreliable power service. With DTE Energy holding a firm monopoly over our energy resources, consumers have been left with no real choices, leading to widespread skepticism and dissatisfaction.

Year after year, we face staggering electric bills that only exacerbate household financial strains. Many families, including mine, struggle to balance these hikes while attempting to keep the power on. Meanwhile, DTE collected $1.1 billion in profits last year, as reported by the Detroit Free Press. This stark contrast between escalating costs to consumers and the company's thriving profit margins is simply unacceptable.

On top of elevated costs, Michigan households confront frequent and prolonged power outages. Just this year, our family had to endure a week without power due to a summer storm—a malady that is, unfortunately, all too common. This recurrent issue not only disrupts our daily lives but also jeopardizes the health and safety of our community, especially for our elders and those with medical needs.

We need urgent reform in Michigan's energy sector. We propose opening the energy market to competition to break DTE's monopoly, enabling us to choose from multiple energy suppliers. Other states have successfully implemented this model, seeing considerable improvements in both cost and service reliability. For instance, Texas, which offers residential energy choice, boasts lower average retail electricity prices compared to monopoly states.

Additionally, we urge for the establishment of an independent regulatory body to oversee utility practices and ensure accountability. Implementing introductory programs for renewable energy options can also help transition Michigan towards a more sustainable and equitable energy future.

We need your support to convince policymakers to step up and influence change. This call is not only for our current well-being but for future generations who deserve to inherit a state that offers fair, reliable, and sustainable energy solutions.

Stand with us to demand energy choice, fair rates, and accountability in Michigan. Sign this petition to make your voice heard and amplify the call for change.
