Brazil Supreme Federal Court: Don’t Steal Rainforest Tribal Lands For Factory Farming

Brazil Supreme Federal Court: Don’t Steal Rainforest Tribal Lands For Factory Farming
The Issue
- BRAZIL IS NOW THE WORLD’S LARGEST BEEF EXPORTER
Brazil’s President Bolsonaro is asking its highest court to take away Indigenous Peoples’ land to allow further decimation of Brazil’s rainforest. Should that fail, the Congress has also enacted Bill PL 490, which was greatly influenced by agricultural and mining lobbyists.- Brazil has sovereignty over over 60% of the Amazon rainforest. The rainforest is home to the largest concentration of biodiversity on our planet with more species of birds, plants, and animals than anywhere else in the world. It also contains gold, aluminum, and oil deposits. Seventeen percent of the Amazon has already been lost to deforestation. The largest driver of deforestation in Brazil is now cattle ranching, better known as factory farming. Brazil is now the world’s largest beef exporter. It needs to be noted that massive clearing of land is necessary for this scale of farming, and many have discovered the most expeditious way to achieve this is to simply set the land ablaze, a tactic many are now employing with great alarm to environmentalists.
- This is what the passage of Bill PL 409 will allow: No limits to conversion of forests into agriculture. Completion of 28 hydroelectric dams constructed inside Indigenous territories, which will severely alter aquatic ecosystems. Allows the government to eliminate Indigenous reserves (Brazil currently has 60 Indigenous reserves, home to approximately 70,000 Indigenous Peoples) should it be deemed necessary. Opens the door to major infrastructure projects, oil and gold exploration, mining, logging, road, bridge, and railway building, all with no environmental impact analysis conducted or required, and carried out without allowing any input from the affected communities.
- Indigenous ancestral lands and people are increasingly threatened by violent land thieves, known as land grabbers, who are aided by government agencies. These horrific attacks are carried out to allow quick and easy access to their lands. Indigenous Peoples have no way to fight back, forced to flee their ancestral homes with very few options pending towards the future.
- Please tell Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court not to obey President Bolsonaro and his allies, and decree the Indigenous Peoples, who are the real guardians of the rainforest, the true and rightful owners of the land.
