We were encouraged to hear Sen. Creighton reiterate his commitment to protecting Jones State Forest at the community meeting on April 9. He heard loud and clear that our community does not support the development of any portion of the forest beyond its original intent. Sen. Creighton has made a public commitment to changing the language of SB 1964 to "...protect 100% of the forest from being used by the University for anything other than its current use" and "prevent any changes to be made without public approval". However, the revised version of SB 1964 he has proposed does not include these provisions. For now, we continue to ask that this bill not move forward. In the meantime, we have started preparations for the possibility of a public hearing in Austin. Three teams will mobilize. One will head to Austin while the other two will work locally and virtually, online and via phone, to respond. Join a team today to get information about what you can do to voice your opposition to the development of Jones State Forest on the day of the public hearing. Today, you can take action by calling Sen. Seliger, chair of the Higher Education Committee, and the person responsible for deciding which bills will move forward in the committee. Asking Sen. Seliger not to move SB 1964 forward until Sen. Creighton revises the bill to protect 100% of the forest from use beyond its original intent.
